ST JOSEPH’S CURRICULUM – PSHE
INTENT IMPLEMENTATION IMPACT

At St. Joseph's we believe that the personal, social and health development of each child, in conjunction with their citizenship skills, has a significant role in their ability to learn.

We value PSHE and Citizenship in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. In addition, we believe that a child needs to learn about the many emotional aspects of life and how to manage their own emotions.

We strongly believe in children having a 'growth mindset' and of being emotionally literate so that they are able to succeed academically. We believe in encouraging the Learning Behaviours of children.

We will give children the right curriculum with appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the duties of the National Curriculum whereby schools must provide a ‘balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.

The school curriculum will focus on three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world.

Through whole school activities, and cross curricular opportunities, PSHE is present throughout all year groups. We aim to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to express themselves, talk about relevant matters, learn without judgement and belong to a school where bullying does not exist. These opportunities for learning are done through PSHE lessons, circle time and whole school activities.

We stay up to date with PSHE curriculum expectations, and attend trainings events to ensure our children receive the highest quality of teaching.

The children have opportunities to join extra-curricular groups to voice their opinions and the opinions of their peers. They are the heart of our school community and we make sure their voices are listened to. These groups include school council, junior leadership, faith ambassadors and eco monitors. This provides our children with the opportunity to express themselves and take part in the wider community, understanding that wellbeing and citizenship is everywhere.

Children at St Joseph’s will be confident, resilient, reflective learners.

They play an active role in the wider community, demonstrating good citizenship.

The will lead a healthy, safe lifestyle with the ability to make appropriate risk assessments and manage these.

They will develop good relationships and respect the differences between people.

They will make a positive contribution to the life of the school and respect and have an awareness of other’s feelings and their own.

Children feel safe in our learning environment and can confidently seek help when needed. They are supported through any challenges and flourish in the care given.
