Swimming
At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School we aim for our children to leave Key Stage 2 being able to:
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
- swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke
Swimming is the only sport that must be included in the National Curriculum for PE, and we offer swimming as part of the Year 3 and 4 curriculum. Pupils attend swimming lessons at the facilities provided by Maltman's Green School. Children are assessed at the end of the swimming unit and this data will be published at the end of KS2.
Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activities over and above the national curriculum requirements. We have used it in the academic year 2020-2021 to provide additional swimming support for those pupils who have been unable to access swimming due to Covid.
As part of our continued commitment to promoting the lifelong benefits of physical education, we offer the opportunity for children to participate in catch-up sessions during Year 6. This is to ensure the key swimming skills, that have lifelong benefits, can be achieved by all.
